Raku, meaning "enjoyment" or "pleasure", is a way of making pottery that was developed in Japan near the end of the 16th century.  Raku, as practiced in this country, involves a very rapid firing of pieces (unglazed or coated with low fire glazes), which are then removed hot (2000 degrees F.) from the kiln and placed in leaves or other combustible materials for reduction.

Glazed Raku pieces may have a luster, and frequently, a crackle.  Unglazed surfaces turn a rich black or a smoky gray.  Because of their spontaneity and unpredictable results, Raku firings are exciting to watch or participate in.  These pieces are not intended for food or drink.  They are for decorative use only.  If you intend to use a vase, please first put a watertight cup or bowl inside.
