History of St.
Stanislaus Parish
St. Stanislaus
Parish was started by Father Cataldo, a Jesuit
missionary who was born near Palermo, Sicily on March
17, 1837. He qualified for admission into the Jesuit
order on December 22, 1852. His first mass was in
Maestricht, Holland. Father Cataldo came to Santa
Clara, a Jesuit College in California in 1863. There
he requested to go to the Pacific Northwest on
missions.

A
second church was built near the original site in 1886. A bell
tower was built a few years later and a bell installed in
1890. (That very bell is hanging in the present St. Stanislaus
church steeple.) The parish continued to grow and a new church
building was started in 1904 under the direction of Father
Post. The 1st mass was said in the new building on
Pentecost Sunday, 1905. The building cost $8,000 and used
stones for its exterior. This is the church building currently
in use today located at 633 5th Avenue. A rectory,
school and parish center were all added later. St. Stanislaus
Parish is planning a celebration in 2004 for the 100 year
anniversary of the current church building. Further information on the
history of St. Stanislaus Parish can be obtained by contacting
the parish office at (208)743-7331 or e-mail ststans@lewiston.com.

He
was granted permission and arrived in the Northwest in
1865. He came to Lewiston in 1867 where he built the first
church in town. He named the parish for St. Stanislaus
Koska. The first church building was 18 feet x 20 feet and
too small but it served the parish for 20 years at its
location near 5th and N Streets. (Click

Patron
Saint of St. Stanislaus
St. Stanislaus Kostka (1550-1568)
St.
Stanislaus was only 18 years old and had been a Jesuit
novice for less than a year when he died. Yet he had
led such an exemplary and holy life that he was
beautified just 36 years after his death. He was
canonized by Pope Benedict XIII on December 31, 1726.
His feast day is November 13th. St.
Stanislaus’s remains are now buried beneath the
altar dedicated to him in the Sant’ Andrea del
Quirinale Church in Rome.
Prayer
to St. Stanislaus
Lord our
God, you looked on Saint Stanislaus Kostka with love
as he consecrated his youth to you with such
generosity of heart. Renew us in spirit so that we may
be eager and joyful as we walk the way of your
commandments. Help us to fill our days with good works
and so redeem the shortness of this life. We ask this
through Our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and
reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever
and ever. |
